1) Primary sport(s): ultra and trail running
2) Team member since: 2007
3) City/state of residence: Asheville, NC
4) Occupation: Counselor at Warren Wilson College
5) Goals for 2010: Continue to experiment with a variety of terrains and distances, from avenging last year’s abysmal aquathlon performance (no more panic attacks in the lake!) to SCAR, an unsupported 70+ mile 24-hour traverse of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park along the Appalachian Trail. I’ll also run trail races from 10k to 50 miles, and possible take another stab at the 24 Hour distance. My primary goals are to keep it fresh and to have fun!
6) Notable achievements/memories/PR’s in your sport: 6-time member of the U.S. 100km team, with a Silver Medal finish at the 2005 World Cup. Ten USATF national titles in distances from the trail marathon to the 100km road.
7) Favorite inov-8 gear: I love being able to feel the trail in the low profile shoes like the RocLite 285 and the X-Talon. The RocLite 295s have also served me well in the longer distances such as Western States and the 24 Hours of Boulder.
8) List one thing others may not know about you: I am an avid knitter and closet country music fan.
9) Favorite energy drink/food: Honey Stinger gels, chews and bars. They taste great and really do the job.
10) Your favorite race and why? Too many to name! Anything that provides an interesting, scenic and challenging terrain and good competition.
11) Advice to other athletes: I’ve been through so many phases with my running – very competitive and driven at times, low key at others; focused on roads and speed at times, trails and adventure at others…my main advice is to follow your heart and not listen to what anyone else has to say about what you “should” be doing. If you focus on what makes you feel happy and fulfilled, success will follow. Train hard and race harder, but in the end, remember that it is only running. Keep things in perspective and don’t take yourself too seriously!
